The word reindeer means "animal that pastures." Reindeer are a beautiful domesticated and intelligent animal and can be trained quite easily. Reindeers and humans have been living together in northern Scandinavia peninsula for thousands of years where the Sami people live, an area stretching from northern Norway to the Kola peninsula in Russia. Some people refer to these indigenous people of the north as Laplanders, but it is Sami what they preferred to be called. Today, they are herded by many Arctic peoples in Europe and Asia including the Nenets, Chukchi and others in Russia. The herding area covers all the Lapland area in the north of Finland, Sweden and Norway too.
The Sami use the reindeer for a variety of purposes. They eat them, milk them and the sinew was traditionally used to make thread, whereas tools, utensils and jewelry are made out of the bones. The thick, warm fur coat is used to make shelter, clothing, bags, leather goods and also many popular handicraft materials.
The reindeer is a majestic animal, but did you know that reindeer are excellent swimmers? Perhaps one of the most fascinating characteristics of the reindeer are its antlers and no two antlers are the same; every antler has its own shape and design. Also, the reindeer is the only species of deer in which the female has horns as well as the male.
A male is referred to as a buck, a female is referred to as a doe. The sound they make is refered to as a bellow. Each reindeer makes a unique call. Reindeer have four stomachs that are very similar to a cow's, they eat a wide variety of vegetation consisting of edible mushrooms, tough grasses and of course lichen (also known as reindeer moss) which is actually a symbiotic relationship of algae and fungi also being the favourite food of reindeer.
